Grandma Edna's Strawberry Shortcake Recipe

2/3 c sugar
1/4 c shortening
1 t. vanilla
1 egg

1 1/2 c flour sifted
2 t. baking powder
1/4 t. salt

1/2 c milk

1qt strawberries cleaned and hulled.

Directions:
Directions:
Mash the strawberries and cover with 1/2 to3/4 c sugar. Let chill for an hour or two.

Pre-heat oven to 325º
Grease and flour a 13x9 cake pan, set aside.

Beat together the first four ingredients till smooth.
Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt into the wet ingredients, add the milk and mix thoroughly.
Pour into the 13x9 cake pan, sprinkle sugar over top of cake.
Bake in 325º oven for about 15 - 20 minutes or until brown on top.

When cooled slightly cut and serve with strawberries poured over top.
Add whip cream if you like

My mom had a tin can that dad had cut the top rim off, leaving a sharp edge. There was a hole punched in the bottom. This is what she used to cut and mash the strawberries with.

The best thing about this short cake is it didn't get soggy quick.
