1½ pounds boneless beef, cut in 1 inch cubes
3 cups hot water
½ tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
½ clove garlic, minced
½ medium onion, sliced
1 small bay leaf, crumbled
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
½ tsp sugar
4 carrots, halved
4 small onions
4 small potatoes

Directions:
Directions:
Brown meat thoroughly in a little butter, on all sides (about 30 minutes) in heavy saucepan. Add all ingredients except vegetables. Cover tightly and simmer about 2 ½ hours until tender. Add vegetables; cook 30 minutes longer until vegetables are tender. If you wish to thicken broth, remove solids from stew to hot platter. Slowly stir in a smooth paste of ½ cup water and ¼ cup flour. Bring to a boil and boil for one minute. Taste, season and pour over stew.
