2 c. flour
1 c. sugar
¼ c. shortening
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp. soda
1 egg, beaten
1c. raw cranberries, coarsely chopped
Juice of 1 orange + enough water to make ¾ c. of liquid
1 Tbsp. grated orange rind
½ c. chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt. Beat in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse corn meal.
Combine orange rind, egg, orange juice and water. Mix with the flour mixture just enough to dampen it. Fold in the cranberries and nuts. Bake in a greased 9 x 5 in. loaf pan at 350º for 1 hour. Remove from the pan and store for several hours before slicing.

A traditional Christmas bread which has been in my family for generations. Nothing tastes more like Christmas to me. Simply scrumptious!
