Ingredients: 1 package (1/4 pound) German Sweet Chocolate 1/2 cup boiling water 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1 cup butter 2 cup sugar 4 egg yolks 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup buttermilk 4 egg whites, beaten until stiff
Coconut-pecan frosting: Mix together in saucepan, 1 cup evaporated milk, 1 cup sugar, 3 egg yolks, 1/2 cup butter, 1 tsp vanilla. Cook and stir until thickened, about 12 minutes. Add 1 1/3 cups shredded coconut and 1 cup chopped pecans. Beat until cool and thick enough to spread. Frost the tops of layers only. Makes 3 cups.

Directions:Melt chocolate in boiling water; cool. Sift flour, salt and baking soda. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add yolks, one at a time, beating after each. Add vanilla and melt chocolate. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, heating until smooth. Fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour batter into three 8 or 9 inch pans greased and poured. bake in moderate oven, 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Leave in pans 10 minutes, turn out onto cooling rack.
