½ c. peanut butter

Directions:
Cream together the shortening and peanut butter. Gradually add the sugars, egg, milk and vanilla. Beat well. Add the flour, soda and salt. Shape dough into balls and place on a cookie sheet to bake. (You may roll the balls in sugar if desired.) Bake 350º for 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and press a candy kiss or star in the center of each one. Press firmly so each cookie cracks around the edge.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Alvina had six aunts who were Franciscan Sisters based at the Motherhouse in Dubuque, Iowa. Each summer some of them would come to Grandma Susie Freilinger's house for a home visit. They would bring little gifts (rosaries, holy cards, medals, ribbons, etc.) for us. Sister Clarissa was a housekeeper/cook at the convents where she was stationed and she would also bring recipes.
