1/2C Shortening or butter
1C Brown sugar
1 Egg
1/2tsp Vanilla
1 3/4C Flour
1/2tsp Baking soda
1/4tsp Salt

Filling:
3/4lb Dates finely chopped
1/3C Water
1/2C Shopped nuts

Optional: replace water with orange juice or just add some orange zest 1tsp or so to the filling.

Mix the shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla til creamy.
Mix the flour, soda and salt well and add to the shortening mixture.

Filling:
Add the dates and water to a small saucepan and cook til slightly thick then add the nuts.
Divide the dough in half, on wax paper roll each piece into an 11"x7" rectangle.
Spread half of the filling on each rectangle. Tightly roll the dough up on the long side and roll the wax paper around the log. Chill for several hours. Cut into 1/4" slices and bake @400 for 10 minutes
