Shape into round balls and put in greased pan



It is customary to insert a coin (dime or quarter) wrapped in aluminum foil, in the vasilopeta for good luck.
Divide the dough as for the Easter bread. Before final rising, insert the coin into each round of dough.
Next, you can use strips of dough to make the numbers of the year or use can use almonds to make the year and decorate the top.
Cover again and let rise in a warm place and continue as for Easter bread

VASILOPETA is made for St Basil’s feast day-January 1st. This tradition started in the 4th century, when St Basil the Great, who was a bishop, wanted to distribute money to the poor. He wanted to preserve their dignity, so as not to look like charity, he commissioned some women to bake sweet bread, in which he arranged to place gold coins. Vasilopeta means Basil’s bread
