DOUGH
2 cup flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk
APPLES
Peel and slice apples of your choice. Add cinnamon and sugar to the apples
SYRUP
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup water1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
3 tbs butter

Sift together the dry ingredients and cut in the shortening. Make a well in the middle and add the milk all at once.Mix until the flour is moist. Roll into 18x12 rectangle. Cut into 6" squares.
Mix apples with cinnamon and sugar. Put the apple mixture in the middle of each square. dot with butter and bring the edges together to form ball around the apples. Put in 9x13 pan. Bring all ingredients of syrup (except butter) to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in butter. Pour over dumplings and bake 375 about 35 minutes.

It better to use a combination of sweet and tart apples such as Granny Smith with honey crisp or gala or fuji. I like Macintosh but they are a soft apple and if you use only them they might get mushy. The syrup will thicken as it bakes.

My Grandmother had apple trees in her yard and she made these every year in the fall when the apples were ripe.
