During my first year of middle school teaching, 1974, I hosted the faculty at my house and purchased a copy of the Pillsbury Bake Off recipe book (trademarked 2971-recipe entered by Francis Jerzak of Porter Minnesota) at the checkout line at the grocery store. I made the recipe below and since that day, it has been our family's favorite birthday cake!

Ingredients:

Cake Bars:

1 package Pillsbury Moist Supreme Devil's Food Cake Mix
1 (21- oz) can cherry pie filling
1 teaspoon almond extract
3 eggs, beaten

Frosting:

1 cup sugar
1/3 cup milk
5 tablespoons butter
1 (6 oz) package (1 cup) semisweet chocolate chips

Steps

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 13 x 9-inch pan. Combine all cake ingredients; stir until blended; don't over blend; pour into pan and bake for 25-35 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.

For the frosting, in a small saucepan, combine sugar, milk and butter. Bring to a boil and boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in chips until smooth, pour over warm bars.
