Directions:
Tommy, as a young boy(10-12 years old) would make these boiled peanuts to sell in their family grocery store, Parkerson's Grocery. He would sell the peanuts for spending money.

In order to make a large quantity(bushel) at the time, he would set up his kitchen in his backyard by using a large metal trash can over an open fire.

He would fill up the trash can with water and peanuts about 5-6 inches from the top of the can. He would add salt through out the cooking process, to get the desired amount of salt(approximately one box of salt).

He boiled the peanuts until they were soft, salty and juicy, approximately 2-3 hours. As the water evaporated, he would add water and salt as needed. Lots of tasting was required along the way. The key to really good boiled peanuts was to allow them to soak in the salty water to desired saltiness.

In addition, to selling the boiled peanuts in the family grocery store, Tommy would ride his Schwinn bicycle down Ashley Street in Valdosta to sell his peanuts to the local businesses. He sold his peanuts for 10c for a 5 oz bag. His bicycle was purchased for about $50 at the Firestone store with profits from his peanut sales.
