1/2 c shortening
1/2 c sugar
1 egg - beaten
2 1/2 c flour - sifted
1 12/ tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp salt
1 c molasses
1 c hot water

Directions:
Directions:
In small bowl cream together the shortening and sugar. Add the beaten egg.

In separate bowl, mix and sift dry ingredients.

Combine molasses and hot water and mix well.

Add dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients, alternating small amounts at a time and beat after each addition until smooth.

Bake in paper lined pan 9x9x2 in 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Add 1/2 c raisins (approximately two small snack size boxes) if preferred.

In lieu of lining the pan with paper, you can grease and flour the pan.

To make cupcakes, use 3 c flour in place of the 2 1/2 cups.
