2 cups raisins
1 cup water

Boil together for 5 minutes, cool.

Cream together:

1 cup shortening (I use margarine)
2 cups white sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla

Add:

4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon cloves
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Bake at 350ºF
