Directions:Steps: This sauce takes about 10-15 minutes to prepare Mix in saucepan flour, sugar and salt (blend well) Add 2 yolks (stir in and blend well) - save egg white for meringue Add 2 cups of milk On stovetop medium/high heat, stirring constantly until thickened (to avoid lumps), once thickened, turn off the burner and add 1 teaspoon of vanilla flavoring
Now what: Preheat over to 400 degrees
Use an oven safe dish then begin next steps- (recommend a glass dish where you can see the layers) Layer bottom of bowl with vanilla wafers Pour portion of pudding mixture to cover wafers Slice banana and layer Add another layer of vanilla wafers and continue the pudding layering and banana slices until all used/meets preference
Meringue: Total bake time is 8-10 minutes or until brown Add 2 egg whites in mixer with 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar (beat with mixer until stiff) Add 4 tablespoons of sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, until dissolved Beat with mixer until whites stand on a peak
Last step: Add meringue on top of layered pudding dish - OVEN time is really just to brown the meringue, although the warmth of the Banana Pudding is delicious! Place in oven at 400 degrees until tops reach desired tan coloring

Notes: This recipe takes me back to my childhood. I spent lots of time in the kitchen with my grandmother.
My grandpa's favorite dessert was my grandma's banana pudding, the way her momma made it. Time spent with my grandparents holds such fond memories, often in the kitchen and around the table as we talked about our day, prayed for people we cared for, and those who were suffering.
On many birthdays, grandmother would make the yummy warm dessert. It was always such a treat for us. We absolutely loved eating it warm, but even when refrigerated and taken out later, it still was just as delicious.
I gratefully think of the time I spent in the kitchen with my grandma. My heart smiles when I think of my daughter, Alicia, also wearing the same apron I did, standing next to grandmother on a stool helping her make the pudding treat. I consider how full my heart is knowing I will make this same delicious treat with my own granddaughter, Amelia Kate.
These memories make me smile whenever I make the pudding for family gatherings, or when asked for an occasion. Thank you for letting me share my love story, I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as our family does.
