5 cups Sugar
2 1/2 cups Solid Vegetable Shortening
3 Eggs
1/2 cup Molasses
1 Tbl. Vanilla


In a very large mixing bowl, combine the sugar and shortening. Mix thoroughly.

Add the eggs, molasses, and vanilla. Mix well.

7 cups Flour
2 Tbls. Baking Soda
2 Tbls. Baking Powder
1 1/2tsp. Nutmeg
1 Tbl. Cinnamon
1 Tbl. Salt
6 cups Oats
1 cup Buttermilk, or sour milk
1 cup Raisins
1 cup Peanuts, chopped


In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt. Add the oats to the dry ingredients and mix. Add the flour mixture gradually to the creamed mixture, alternating with the buttermilk.

Fold in the raisins and nuts. Chill 2-3 hours or overnight.

Preheat the oven to 375°

1 Egg white beaten
1/8 tsp. Cinnamon mixed with 2Tbls. Sugar


Using an ice cream scoop, form the dough into large balls. Place 4 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. Flatten with fingers. Brush each cookie with beaten egg white and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake 12 to 15 minutes
