¾ lb dates, chopped
⅓ cup sugar
⅓ cup water
1 tsp lemon juice
½ cup chopped walnuts

2 cups sifted flour
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp cream of tartar
⅛ tsp salt

1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar-packed

1 egg
1 tbsp cream
2 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Combine dates, ⅓ c sugar, water, lemon juice and walnuts. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until pasty, about 2 minutes. Cool. Sift together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Beat butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, cream and vanilla until well blended. Gradually add sifted dry ingredients. Mix well. Divide dough into 2 sections. Roll each section into a rectangle,8x10 inches. Spread each with half the filling; roll up as for jelly roll. Wrap each roll in wax paper. Chill several hours or overnight. Slice cookies about ½ inch thick. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake in oven at 350º for 12-15 minutes. Cool. Store in air tight container.
