4 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
2 TB shortening, melted
1 cup buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
*Measure flour, add baking soda, salt and spices. Sift together. Beat together sugar and eggs, add shortening and milk, add flour. Beat well.
*Roll out on floured board 1/4" thick.
*Cut with floured doughnut cutter. Fry in deep fat 360º, turning once. Drain on paper towels, dip in sugar. Makes about 3 dozen

**Grandma frequently made these to sell for her church's bakesale. I remember her at home frying all day as someone else ran back and forth, delivering them to the sale. So they were really "fresh" donuts**
