Ingredients:
Ingredients:
½ c. solid shortening
½ c. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1½ c. flour
¼ tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
red or green food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, salt and soda together and set aside. Cream together shortening and sugar, when well combined add egg and vanilla and mix well. Stir in dry ingredients, mix well.

Place ⅓ of dough in a separate bowl.

Color ⅔ of the dough red or green (red for bells, green for trees). Mold the colored dough into a 1½ inch by 10 inch roll and chill. Remove from the refrigerator. For bell shape, squeeze top half together, leaving lower half flared and curving like a bell. For tree, squeeze into a rectangle.

Reserve ¼ of your uncolored dough for use as bell clappers or tree trunks. Roll out the remainder of dough into a 10"X4" rectangle large enough to cover colored dough roll. Trim edges and wrap colored dough. Chill again.

Heat oven to 375º F. Slice dough with sharp knife, ⅛ inch thick. Place on ungreased baking sheet, ½ inch apart. Press tiny balls of white dough to bottom of bells to form clappers or to trees to form trunks. Bake 8-10 minutes.

Personal Notes:
Yet another must have cookie for the holidays. It just wasn't Christmas until Mom had made some bells and trees. Sometimes she would wait and make them for New Year's Day.
