Ingredients: Cookie Dough: 2/3 c shortening 2/3 c butter - softened 1 1/2 c sugar 3 1/2 c flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 2 eggs - well beaten
Colored Sugar: Put 1/4 c sugar in a small container with a lid. Add 1 to 2 drops of desired food coloring. Seal with the lid and shake vigorously until combined. Open lid and allow sugar to dry. This step should be done in advance of making the dough to allow time for the sugar to dry.

Directions:Combine dry ingredients in medium mixing bowl. In a separate mixing bowl, add shortening and sugar. Mix on low speed until smooth. Add eggs and blend until just mixed. Add dry ingredients and mix until dough gathers together. Remove dough from bowl and use your hands to form a ball. Cut this into quarters.
Preheat oven to 350º. Use a pastry canvas and sprinkle liberally with flour. Use your hands to rub the flour into the canvas then add more flour to the center of the cloth spreading it around to cover the middle. Take 1/4 of the dough and cut it in 1/2. Take this and pat it into a circle with well floured hands. Roll out the dough, flouring the rolling pin to prevent it from sticking. The dough should roll out to a 14"x14" form. Dip your cookie cutters in flour to prevent them from sticking. Place cookies on an ungreased baking sheet. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake 6-10 minutes or until golden brown. |
