Gram's Yeast Rolls Recipe

2 packages of yeast

½ cup lukewarm water

1½ cup milk

2 tsp salt

½ cup sugar

¼ cup melted shortening

1 egg slightly beaten

5½ cups flour

Directions:
Directions:
Warm water to lukewarm (80 º) and add yeast. Scald milk and pour into a mixing bowl with sugar, salt, shortening and mix well. Let the mixture cool.

When the mixture has cooled to lukewarm add 2 cups of flour and beat well. Mix in the yeast and beaten egg. Add the rest of the flour and mix until a soft dough forms. Turn out on a floured board and knead until it becomes satiny. Place in a greased bowl and lightly grease the top of the dough. Cover with a towel. Allow to rise and double in size.

Shape into small balls and place in a greased pan. Cover with a towel and let rise until doubled.

Bake at 425 º for 15 - 20 minutes. Brush tops with butter as they come out of the oven.

We could smell the rolls baking while bike riding before we approached Gram's house.
