Ingredients:
Ingredients:
Syrup:
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup water
Batter:
½ cup milk
½ cup dates, cut up
½ cup nuts, chopped (save a few whole for garnish)
½ cup brown sugar
2 tsps. baking powder
1½ cup flour

Directions:
Directions:
Butter sides of Dutch oven or casserole - put syrup in it. (I boil it in my cast iron Dutch oven; then run a stick of margarine around the edge to help keep it from boiling over). Make a batter of - milk, dates, chopped nuts, brown sugar, baking powder and flour. Drop batter by spoonful into hot syrup. Put in oven 350º to 375º and bake until dumplings test done with a toothpick. When done, spoon dumplings out onto a serving platter, piling them in a mound - pour syrup over and garnish with nut meats.
*Bonnie: I use a double recipe for the platter, double the batter, but one and a half the syrup is enough.

Personal Notes:
Bonnie: Passed down from Aunt Ivy (Grandma Rosabelle Roby's sister), to Grandma Rosabelle Roby, to my Mom (Esther), then to me (Bonnie), and enjoyed by all my children and grandchildren - also many other family members and friends! Who knows where it will turn up next? 😊
