Ingredients:  
4 cups liquid (3 cups water, 1 cup milk)
3 tsp salt
½ - 2/3 cup sugar
1 rounded tbsp shortening
1 cake household yeast
Flour – quantity sufficient to make a stiff dough

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve sugar, salt, shortening in ½ of hot liquid. Let cool to lukewarm or add part of cold liquid to cool. Stir in some of the flour. Beat in the softened yeast and continue to add flour until stiff dough is formed. Knead well.

Put in greased bowl to rise until doubled. Punch down and let rise again. Shape into 4 loaves. Let loaves rise until double.

Bake at 375° for 30 minutes, lower heat to 350° and bake an additional 20 – 30 minutes until brown. Remove from oven and brush top of loaf with butter. Let cool on rack.
