4 egg yolks or 2 whole eggs
1 cup sugar
2 Tbsp soft shortening
3/4 cup buttermilk or sour cream
3 ½ cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt

Directions:

Beat thoroughly the egg yolks or whole eggs. Beat in the sugar and soft shortening. Then stir in buttermilk or sour cream. Sift together and stir in the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Turn onto generously floured board. Roll out 1/2 inch thick. Let rest 20 minutes. Cut with doughnut cutter. Cook in hot fat until brown. Drain on absorbent paper. Temp at 370º or 380º. Heat the fat to 390 before frying as it cools when food is dropped in. Makes 2-3 dozen doughnuts.
