Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1/4 cup warm water--1 pkg. yeast (2 - 3 heaping tbsp.)
1 cup scalded milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/4 cup shortening
1 egg
4 cups flour

Directions:
Directions:
Mix yeast and water and set aside. It is ready when it bubbles..
Scald the milk, set aside. Then add milk, sugar, salt, shortening, and egg into a large bowl. Mix it together. Then add the yeast mixture. Stir. Add the flour a little bit at a time. Dough will be sticky.
Let raise once, punch it down and then start working.
When making long johns, take the dough and roll it out. You will want it 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick, then cut the pieces to 6-inch length and 3-inch width. Make two cuts almost all the way to the top and braid. Then let them raise again. When they have raised, cook them in hot oil.

You can also make buns. Shape into buns and let raise again.
Bake at 350º for about 15 - 18 minutes.

Note: When I double it, I only use about 7 cups of flour.

Personal Notes:
Dough could also be used for caramel rolls, kolache and buns. This is the recipe that was also used for Grandma Lucy's caramel rolls in the Cafe. This is Grandma Lucy's sister, Dorothy Cahoy's, recipe.

If you are short of time, you can buy frozen bread dough or sweet dough and just follow the directions. The Rhodes sweet dough is the best we have tried.
