Approximately 2/3 c. sour milk
4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 c. sugar
1 egg
1 c. lard
1 and 1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Kneed or mix by hand. Moisten with sour milk. Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick and cut with round cookie cutter.

Bake at 400 degrees until light brown on the edges.

These cookies traveled with our family by wagon train when the migrated west. Key to note, use lard not shortening. If you need to sour the milk, add a small amount of vinegar or lemon juice.

Dough should look and feel like a pie crust texture when you're rolling and cutting. It's important not to overbake these, but as with all grandma Mac's family recipes, the measurements were guesstimates. Add the milk slowly and you may find you actually need more than what is listed.

Keep cookies in an airtight container.
