Crust layer and topping:

1 C brown sugar
1 C shortening
1 Tbsp water
½ tsp baking soda
2 ½ C oatmeal
2 C flour
pinch of salt

Filling:

1 lb. dates
½ C sugar
1 C water
3 Tbsp lemon juice

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening. Mix together water and baking soda then add to creamed sugar and shortening. Add salt, oatmeal, and flour. Remove about 1 C of mixture for topping. Pat remaining mixture in 9x13 tin.

Boil water, dates, sugar. Cool. Add lemon juice. Add filling to crust layer. Top with remaining 1C of oatmeal mixture. Bake 375º for 12 minutes.
