Hershey's Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake* |

Ingredients: 3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) butter 1-2/3 cups granulated sugar 3 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 2/3 cup Hershey's cocoa powder 1-1/4 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1/4 tsp baking powder 1-1/3 cups water
Optional: 1/2 cup crushed hard peppermint candy

Directions: |
Directions:1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans or one 13x9x2-inch baking pan.
2. Combine butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla in large bowl; beat on high speed of mixer 3 minutes. Stir together flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt and baking powder; add alternately with water to butter mixture, beating until blended. Add candy, if desired. Pour batter into prepared pans.
3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely.
4. Frost with "Buttercream Frosting". Just before serving, garnish with peppermint candy, if desired. |

Ingredients: 1/3 cup butter, softened to room temperature 3 cups sifted confectioners' sugar About 3 tbsp cream, half 'n half, or milk 1-1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions: |
Directions:1. Combine softened butter and powdered sugar, thoroughly.
2. Stir in cream (milk) and vanilla. Continue to stir until smooth. If additional liquid is needed, add milk 1 tsp at a time. If too thin, add powdered sugar.
Makes enough to frost two 8" or 9" layer cakes, or one 13' x 9" oblong cake. |

Notes: Grandma Doris made this devils food cake for Christmas, Grandaddy's birthday, and many other occasions. We all loved it! She did not add the peppermint candy, but it might be very festive at Christmas.
* This old-fashioned HERSHEY'S chocolate cake recipe first appeared on the back of HERSHEY'S Cocoa tins over a century ago, and has become a traditional family recipe.
