1-1/2 cups granulated sugar

2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
1. In mixer bowl, cream butter. Add sugar gradually until it is light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in vanilla.

2. Sift dry ingredients together. Add gradually to creamed butter and egg mixture, and continue to mix until well blended. Cover and chill in refrigerator at least 3 to 4 hours, or overnight.

3. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper, or lightly grease.

4. When completely chilled, roll dough on well-floured board or mat. Roll to 1/8" to 1/4" thickness. Cut with decorative cookie cutters, dipped in flour to prevent sticking.

5. Use a turner to gently lift onto prepared cookie sheets. Decorate with colored sugar, sprinkles, nonpareils, candies, etc.

6. Bake in preheated oven at 375ºF for 6 to 8 minutes, until beginning to lightly brown at edges.

7. Cool on wire racks. If desired, decorate cooled cookies with colored icing.
