1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 cup cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 oz. red food coloring
1 teaspoon vinegar
2 teaspoons cocoa
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla

Frosting:
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1 cup butter
3 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Mix vinegar and soda in cup and set aside. Cream sugar, shortening and eggs. Make paste of a little food coloring and cocoa. Add to creamed mixture. Then add balance of food coloring. Add buttermilk, salt and flour alternately, then add vanilla. Stir and mix well. Lastly, add soda and vinegar mixture. Pour into 2 layer cake pans and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool thoroughly and split layers.

For Frosting, cook milk and flour in double boiler until thick, stirring constantly. Cool. Cream sugar and butter until fluffy. Add vanilla. Mix 1 tablespoon flour mixture with milk, gradually add rest by tablespoons full, beat full speed 2 minutes. Frost between layers, top and sides.
