1⅛ c. Spry (or Butter Crisco)
2½ c. sugar
5 eggs
1¼ c. buttermilk
3 7/16 c. cake flour
5/8 tsp. salt
6¼ T. cocoa
9¾ T. hot water
1 7/8 tsp. soda
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Beat Spry and sugar together. Add eggs one at a time. Sift flour, salt and cocoa together. Add soda to hot water and mix. Add soda water to mixing bowl and blend. Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating well until everything is incorporated. Add vanilla and pour into 2 greased and floured pans. Bake in 350º oven for 32 -36 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool cakes in pans on cooling rack to cool completely before decorating.
