Chocolate Cake:

¾ c. shortening
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 ½ c. flour
½ c. cocoa
2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sour milk
1 c. hot water
1 tsp. vanilla
Dash of salt


Fudge Frosting:

2 c. granulated sugar
3 heaping Tbls. unsweetened cocoa powder
2/3 c. whole milk
½ c. (1 stick) salted butter, cut into cubes
1 ½ tsp. vanilla

Chocolate Cake:

Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Add sifted dry ingredients. Add sour milk and mix, add hot water, and mix. Last add vanilla. Bake 350º for about 45 minutes.


Fudge Frosting:

1. Mix sugar, cocoa powder, and milk together in a large saucepan.
2. Cook over medium-high heat until bubbles form and reaches a hard boil. Boil one minute at a hard boil. Remove from heat and add butter and vanilla.
3. Beat with a wooden spoon until thick and smooth
4. Pour over cake. It will harden as it cools.

Note: the icing hardens quickly

Grandma Geraldine Stahlecker made 100s of these chocolate cakes over her lifetime. She always had one in the freezer just in case.
