Cheap beef (pot roast or flank steak)
Cook and slice in chunks
Sautee butter and mushrooms

Add:
water
au jus
tomato sauce or tomato paste and stewed diced tomatoes
salt and pepper

Cook about 45 min.
Add a carton sour cream

This is Grandma Margaret's recipe. I've never known Beef Stroganoff to have tomatoes in it. This is exactly as she recited the recipe to me from memory.

I would make it this way:
Sautee onions and mushrooms
Brown ground beef
Add a packaged Beef Stroganoff seasoning envelope
Simmer
Add a carton of sour cream

Serve over egg noodles.
