Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in combined flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir in M&M baking bits. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls about two inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10-13 minutes until edges are lightly browned and centers are still soft. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet. Remove to wire rack until completely cooled. Store in tightly covered container. Makes 3 dozen 3 inch cookies.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Forest Mars Jr. of the Mars Candy Co. first came up with the idea of a hard shelled candy with chocolate at the center in 1941. They named the candy M&M which stood for Mars and Murrie, for Franklin Mars Sr. who started Mars Inc. and Bruce Murrie who owned a 20% share of the product. Bruce Murrie was the son of William Murrie, the president of Hershey Chocolate. Thus the only chocolate that could be used for the center of the candy was Hershey.

From the time he was very young, this was one of my son's favorite cookies.
I always put all the cookies directly in the freezer so I will have enough for all my cookie trays when the holidays come. My son always knew, however, that he was allowed to steal these out of the freezer!
