Directions:Line loaf pan 9X5X3 inches with foil, Mix margarine or butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt.. Divide dough into thirds. Stir chocolate and walnuts into one third. Stir cherries into another third. Leave remaining third plain and spread the plain dough in pan. Top with chocolate dough and then cherry dough. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours but no longer than 6 weeks. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Remove dough from pan by lifting foil, and cut dough into 1/4 inch slices. Cut each slice in half and place about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake until light brown about 10 minutes. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Makes about 6 1/2 dozen. ( I actually find it easier to cut the dough in half and then slice it into 1/4 inch slices.) |

Notes: This recipe was from my ex-mother in law, Veda. We made them together. Years later, after she was gone, I tried to find the recipe searching through all my cookbooks. I never could find it, but this version is very similar to the original. They are perfect for people like my husband, who would rather have cookies that aren't too sweet.
