The history of “Grandma’s Meatballs”

Grandma Carroll started making these meatballs when the grandkids were very little. The grandkids loved them, so they became a family tradition! Every gathering the grandkids would ask “Is grandma making her meatballs?” and of course the answer was yes. It was twenty + years grandma made her famous meatballs for an appetizer at every family gathering.

When grandma Carroll passed away, all of the sibs asked who was going to take on making “Grandma’s Meatballs”. The recipe was very simple; however, the critique on the meatballs was going to be pretty tough, so no one wanted to take over the making of the meatballs. Uncle David had recently married Elaine and we said, “she can make the meatballs!” This was the first time for her making them and the first time they were being served after grandma Carroll passed away…the pressure was high to succeed.

Unfortunately, Elaine’s meatball debut was setup to fail because her teammate, Dave, didn’t know the recipe, so he told Elaine the wrong ingredients. Elaine was both nervous and excited to make the meatballs. Unfortunately, it did not turn out well.

The kids all asked what was wrong with grandma’s meatballs…they didn’t taste the same. (Dave told her cocktail sauce instead of chili sauce…Elaine was heartbroken and vowed never to make the meatballs again.

I took over doing the meatballs and it is now a staple with the great-grandkids as well.
