1/2 C butter at room temperature
1 C sugar
6 egg yokes
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 C sifted all-purpose flour
3 tsp baking powder
12-oz jar raspberry or black current jam
6 egg whites
1/2 C sugar
1/2 lb ground walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream butter and add sugar gradually. Beat until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well each time. Add vanilla. Sift flour and baking powder together. Using a spoon, add to butter mixture. Pat dough in the bottom and a little up the sides of a lightly greased 10x14" pan. Spread jam on the dough. Beat egg whites until frothy. Add sugar gradually and beat until stiff. Fold in ground nuts. Spread on top of the jam. Bake for 30 minutes until lightly browned. Cut into small 1 1/2 " spuares when cool.

A favorite among the Southern Slav cookies is the traditional layered cookie. On the bottom a rich crust covered with a layer of jam, jelly, preserves or fruit filling and topped with meringue and nuts. Easy to make, keeps well and fit for any holiday or special occasion.
