1 lb Great Northern Beans
3 stalks celery, chopped
3 carrots, chopped
1 lg onion, chopped
1 regular size can tomatoes (whole, diced, crushed, etc), chopped
1 ham hock with ham on it from a ham you recently cooked or from grocery.
1 cup Bloody Mary Mix (optional)
6-8 cups water
Salt & pepper to taste.

Soak beans in cold water 3-6 hours or overnight. Drain. Place bean & ham hock in large soup pot. Add about 6 cups of water. Heat to boiling, cover & reduce heat to a simmer for an hour.

Add the celery, carrots & onion to the bean mixture. Cover & simmer for another hour.

Add tomatoes, salt & pepper & Bloody Mary Mix (optional). Cover & simmer 40-60 minutes.

This is the basic recipe. If you want it thicker then reduce water. If you want it spicier then add more Bloody Mary Mix.

My mother put potatoes in her soup. I prefer not to.
