Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 c. margarine or butter (or combination - more butter means a flatter cookie)
1 c. brown sugar, packed
½ c. white sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
½ tsp. water
2 eggs
2 c. + 4 T. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1½ c. M&M's + more for decoration

Directions:
Directions:
In a large bowl, beat together margarine/butter and sugars. Add vanilla, water and eggs. Mix well. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Add sifted ingredients to the sugar mixture. Mix well. Stir in 1½ c. M&M's. Refrigerate dough for a couple hours in a sealed container.

Preheat oven to 350º. Spoon heaping tsp. of dough on ungreased cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart. Press additional M&M's gently on dough to add color. Bake about 10-12 minutes until golden. Watch the first batch to adjust baking time. Remove from cookie sheet and cool on open paper bag.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
In addition to the open paper bag trick, Mimi would never mix her dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Instead, she would measure about ¾ cup of flour (make sure you remember how much you are using) and add the salt and baking powder to this flour, mixing it well with a spoon. She would then sprinkle this combined flour over the dough and mix it in well. Then she would add the remaining flour and beat according to the recipe. I've used the same trick all these years, and the leavening is always mixed into the dough well using the method -- no problem! And it's one less bowl to clean afterwards!
