My grandmother, my mother and I have all made this. his recipe. My grandmother was making this in the 1930's, while my mother started baking it in the '40's. I have baked this for over 50 years and had a failure. It's fabulous both just sliced and as toast.
My grandmother would use a covered Dutch-oven on her wood fired stove to hold the dough while it raised. A visiting relative lifted the lid to peek inside only to have the dough oozing out and down the sides. In horror that nosy person tried to stuff it back into the pot to no avail. My family has laughed over this for years.
