1½ cups® packed brown sugar
1¼ cup butter or margarine, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
2 cups quick-cooking oats (maybe more)
1½ cups Gold Medal I bleached flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts, if desired

Directions:

1. Heat oven to 350ºF. In a large bowl, beat sugar, butter, vanilla, and egg with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended, or mix with spoon. Add oats, flour, baking soda, and salt; mix well. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.
2. On undressed cookie sheets, drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls about 2 inches apart.
3. Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheets to cooling racks.
