1 c. chopped dates (½ an 8-oz. package)
1 c. boiling water + 1 tsp. baking soda
1 T. butter, melted
1 egg, beaten
¾ c. sugar
½ c. nuts
Pinch salt
1½ c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°.
2. If not using chopped dates, chop into small pieces; put into mixing bowl.
3. Pour over dates the boiling water, to which the 1 tsp. baking soda has been added.
4. Add melted butter.
5. Add egg, sugar, nuts, salt, and flour (in that order).
6. Mix well (do not mix before all of above are in the bowl).
7. Pour batter into one greased 9x5 loaf pan.
8. Bake 50 mins. (toothpick in center should come out dry).
9. Cool on rack a few minutes, and then remove from pan.

Grammy's recipe has been made by the Madens many times. After the bread was cool, Grammy would slice it, spread a slice with soft cream cheese, cover with another slice, and then cut into triangles and serve. It has been very popular over the years (Papa particularly loved it), and I love serving it at tea parties.
