Notes: People do not use molasses much anymore, but nothing smells better than ginger bread. Nana's old recipes include ingredients that we have gradually drifted away from, but they were signs of how the Depression and World War impacted life. Nana grew up poor and learned to cook from her mother, my formidable Great-Grandmother Agathen. They used ingredients like molasses, condensed milk and canned vegetables. Apparently, Great-Grandmother Agathen also served squirrel and rabbit too--you will be relieved to know those recipes did not make it into this cookbook!!
