"Plain fresh bread, its crust shatteringly crisp. Sweet cold butter. There is magic in the way they come together in your mouth to make a single perfect bite."--Ruth Reichl

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
3 cups white flour
1 1/2 cups wheat flour
1 Tbl salt
1/3 cup sugar
2 Tbl yeast
1 cup powdered milk
1 egg
1 cup vegetable oil
3 cups very hot tap water

Directions:
Directions:
Mix all dry ingredients except wheat flour. Make a well in the center. Place in the middle 1 egg, 1 cup oil and 3 cups hot water (hotter than recipes usually call for, the hottest your tap water can run usually works). Knead, working in wheat flour until smooth. Keep the dough soft, not too hard to work with... use your hands to judge the right amount of flour to add, don't be afraid to adjust the amount.

Cover dough; let rise in a warm place until doubled, about an hour. Punch down split into 2. Knead and shape into loaves. Place in 2 greased and floured pans. Bake at 350 degrees.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This is a "go-by-the-feel" recipe, adjust to keep the dough very soft and workable. If making all wheat bread, use a little more yeast and a little less flour. This recipe was copied while Grandma Shroads was making the bread.
