1 tsp salt
1 tsp nutmeg
1 scant cup ghee
2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
½ cup kefir
2 cups all-purpose flour blend
1 cup ground almonds
1 tsp bread soda
1 cup nuts, chopped

Preheat oven to 190ºC/375ºF and grease a baking tray. In a medium bowl, cream vanilla, nutmeg, salt, brown sugar and butter. Add beaten eggs and mix well. Alternate adding the kefir with the flours, mix into the creamed mixture, combining into a nice dough. Drop by teaspoonful on the tray and bake for 8-10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack and store in an airtight container or cookie jar.

This old recipe from my Grandma Baker makes a big batch of cookies - perfect for a hungry brood. The glutenous recipe stored really well in a stone jar or similar cookie jar (hence the name) - these however, come out very soft and become softer in time. For a more flavourful cookie increase the nutmeg and vanilla to two teaspoons each.
