½ cup butter or margarine
2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
3½ cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped nut meats (pecans)
1 cup pitted dates, chopped
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, add sugar gradually and cream until light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder, soda and salt and sift again. Add gradually to creamed mixture, mixing well. Add flavoring, nut meats and dates. Form dough into rolls 2 inches in diameter. Wrap in waxed paper and chill. Slice in thin slices and bake on greased cookie sheet in a moderate oven, 375 degrees,
8 to 10 minutes.

This is an old recipe. My mother would bake these cookies and have them a ready when my sisters and I got home from school. They are so good, but I never get 10 dozen cookies out of this recipe.
