Ingredients:
Ingredients:
⅓ cup butter
⅓ cup shortening, (I use Crisco)
¾ cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
Dash salt
1 egg
1 T milk
½ tsp vanilla
½ tsp peppermint extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
Red paste food coloring
Sugar

Directions:
Directions:
BEAT butter and shortening in a medium bowl with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the ¾ cup sugar, baking powder, and salt; beat till combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in egg, milk, vanilla, and peppermint extract till combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in remaining flour with a wooden spoon.
REMOVE one fourth of the dough, color it red with paste food coloring. Divide remaining dough in half, color one portion pink and leave the last portion plain. Cover and chill the dough for 30-60 minutes or till easy to handle.
DIVIDE each dough portion into six pieces. Roll each piece into a 12 inch long rope. (The red ropes will be the smallest.) Lay ropes side by side on a lightly floured surface, alternating colors. Roll ropes into a 14 x 9 inch rectangle, about ¼ inch thick. Cut the rectangle into ½ inch wide strips. Cut strips into pieces about 5-7 inches long. Press the ends of shorter strips together to make a strip of desired length. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. (I use parchment paper.) Curve one end to form a candy cane. Sprinkle each cookie with sugar.
BAKE in 375 degree oven for 7-8 minutes or till edges are firm and bottoms are very lightly browned. Transfer to wire racks; cool.

Personal Notes:
I have a difficult time making candy canes as the colored layers come apart while baking, so I now make candy cane sticks instead. Still looks pretty.
