1 1/2 C lukewarm milk
1/2 C lukewarm water
1/2 C sugar
1 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
2 tsp salt
2 packets yeast
2 eggs
1/2 C soft shortening
5-7 C flour
1 egg lightly beaten
Sugar crystals
Slivered almonds

Glaze
1 C powder sugar
Juice one lemon
Lemon zest

Directions:
Directions:
Soak yeast in water for 5 minutes without stirring. Stir completely before adding.
Mix milk, sugar, cardamon, salt. Add yeast. Stir in 2 eggs and shortening. Add half of flour then one cup additional at a time until dough forms a ball. Knead until it’s smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl,turn once, cover and let rise in warm draft free spot until double, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Punch down, pull edges to center, turn over. Cover and let rise until almost double about 30-45 minutes. Divide into three and roll each into a 14” strand. Gently braid starting in center and fold ends under. Cover and let rise double about 30-45 minutes. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle lightly with sugar and almonds. Bake until golden brown, 350º for 35-40 minutes.

Mix glaze ingredients until liquids and drizzle over warm loaf. Serve.

We make this New Years Eve without glaze for breakfast New Year’s Day To reheat wrap in foil and place ina 350 oven for 10 minutes the glaze .
