"The tradition of Italian cooking is that of the matriarch. This is the cooking of grandma. She didn't waste time thinking too much about the celery. She got the best celery she could and then she dealt with it."--Mario Batali

Ingredients:
COOKIES
2½ c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp. ground nutmeg
1¼ c. sugar
¾ c. butter
½ c. egg nog
1 tsp. vanilla
2 egg yolks
1 tbsp. ground nutmeg

ICING
1 ¼ c. powdered sugar
3 tbsp. egg nog
ground nutmeg (for garnish)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 300º. In a medium bowl combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix well with a wire whisk and set aside.

In a large bowl, cream sugar and butter with an electric mixer to form a grainy paste. Add egg nog, vanilla and egg yolks and beat at a medium speed until smooth. Add the dry ingredients and beat at a low speed just until combined. Do not overmix.

Drop by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased baking sheets -- or use small cookie scooper for more uniform sized cookies. Sprinkle lightly with nutmeg. Bake for 23-25 minutes or until bottoms turn light brown. Transfer to cool, flat surface immediately with spatula.

For icing, whisk powdered sugar and egg nog together. Add more sugar or egg nog, depending on the consistency you prefer. (I like a “barely thick” icing for these cookies.)

Drizzle icing on cooled cookies and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Personal Notes:
I make these cookies every year for our family. We put them on a special plate on the fireplace for Santa on Christmas Eve.

One year, I entered these into a Christmas Cookie Contest at work, and won first prize (a red apron and an iPad)!

These are quick and easy to make for cookie swaps or as gifts for your neighbors. The egg nog and nutmeg always smell so good while they are baking and are the perfect kick-off to the holiday season.
