1 pkg. dates (12 oz.), cut fine
1 ½ cups boiling water
2 Tbsp. butter
1 ½ cups sugar
1 Tbsp. vanilla
½ tsp. salt
3 cups sifted flour
½ tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. baking soda
1 cup chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 300º.

Pour boiling water over dates and butter and let cool.

Add sugar and vanilla and mix well.

Mix salt, flour, baking powder and soda together then stir into date mixture.

Add walnuts.

Bake 1 hour then cool.

I made my mom's recipe for date nut bread every Christmas, sometimes making as many as 20 loaves to give away during the holidays! This bread is especially delicious with a smear of cream cheese.
