1½ c. flour, sifted
3 tsp. baking powder
¼ salt
¾ c. sugar
¼ c. shortening
1 egg
½ c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
¼ c. butter, melted

Topping:
½ c. brown sugar, packed
2 T. flour
2 tsp. cinnamon
½ c. chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
1. Mix together the topping ingredients and set aside.
2. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.
3. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until it is like cornmeal or rough sand.
4. In a separate bowl, blend together the egg, well beaten, milk and vanilla, and then add to the flour mix just until blended.
5. Pour into a pan and smooth flat with greased and floured fingers.
6. Cover with melted butter and sprinkle the topping on top.
7. Bake at 350º F for 25 minutes.

This German Coffee Cake is my Grandmother's recipe. She always made it for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I always think of her when I make it.
