Cake:
2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
2 eggs
1/2 c. cocoa
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2-1/2 c. flour
1 c. sour milk (Milk plus 2 T. vinegar)

Frosting:
2 c. sugar
2 sq. chocolate
1/2 c. milk
1/4 c. karo syrup
1/4 tsp. salt

For Cake:
Mix all ingredients and add 1 cup of boiling water. Gently mix together and pour into a 9 x 13 baking pan. Bake in a 350º oven for 40-45 minutes. Let Cool.

For Frosting:
Cook ingredients over a low/medium heat until it reaches a full rolling boil. Boil for 3 minutes or until it reaches the softball stage. Remove from the heat and add vanilla. Beat until glossy. Frost the cake. (This can also be used for a chocolate sauce for ice cream)

This was a standard item at most occasions growing up and our grandma was a very good baker. She made wedding cakes for most of the family and town while growing up.
